ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorisation System) will be a travel authorisation required for visa-exempt travellers visiting 30 European countries for short stays (normally up to 90 days in any 180-day period). This page helps you quickly confirm whether you need ETIAS and where it applies.
ETIAS Eligibility
Introduction
Quick Eligibility Check
Answer three simple questions to find out if you'll need ETIAS.
Quick Eligibility Check
You do not need ETIAS
As an EU/EEA/Swiss citizen, you can travel freely within the Schengen Area without ETIAS authorization.
You will likely need ETIAS
Once ETIAS launches (expected Q4 2026), you will need to apply online before travelling to ETIAS countries. The process is quick and costs €20.
Learn how to applyYou may need a Schengen Visa
ETIAS is only for visa-exempt nationals. If your country requires a visa to enter the Schengen Area, you will need to apply for a Schengen Visa instead.
You may be exempt from ETIAS
If you hold a valid residence permit or long-stay visa issued by an ETIAS country, you may not need ETIAS. Travel with your residence permit alongside your passport.
Check your specific situation
Your eligibility depends on your specific nationality and travel documents. Please check the nationality list below or consult official sources.

Special Cases
These situations require special attention when determining ETIAS eligibility:
If you have multiple nationalities, ETIAS depends on the travel document you use at the border.
- If you have an EU/EEA/Swiss passport: Use that passport to travel, and you won't need ETIAS.
- If both passports are non-EU: Apply for ETIAS using the passport you'll present at the border.
- Important: ETIAS is linked to your passport. Always travel with the same passport used for your ETIAS application.
If you live in an ETIAS country and hold a valid residence permit (or certain residence cards), you may be exempt from ETIAS when travelling.
- Always travel with your passport and your residence permit/card.
- The exemption applies while your residence permit remains valid.
- Special rules may apply for residence permits issued by Cyprus or Ireland—check official guidance.
Visa-exempt minors generally need their own ETIAS authorization.
- A parent or legal guardian typically completes the application on behalf of the child.
- Children may be exempt from the application fee (currently €20 for adults).
- Each child needs their own valid passport linked to their ETIAS.
Transit requirements depend on your routing and whether you pass through border control.
- Airside transit: If you remain in the international transit area without passing border control, ETIAS may not be required (depending on airport and nationality).
- Landside transit: If you must pass border control (e.g., to change terminals, re-check baggage, or exit the airport), ETIAS will be required.
- Always check with your airline and airport for specific requirements.
