ETIAS for US Travellers: Application Rules, Fee and Validity Explained

Travelling to Europe is set to involve an extra step for US passport holders. Under the European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS), some 1.4 billion people from over 60 visa-exempt countries will need a travel authorisation to enter most European countries. Alongside the United States, that includes nationals of Canada, Australia, the United Kingdom and many more.

It is worth being clear about what ETIAS is and is not. As published, it is described informally as a "visa", but it functions as a pre-travel authorisation for visa-exempt visitors rather than a full visa. Here is what American travellers should know before they go.

What ETIAS is and which countries it covers

ETIAS, the European Travel Information and Authorisation System, is an entry requirement for visa-exempt nationals travelling to 30 European countries, including Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland, among others.

With a valid ETIAS, you can enter these countries as often as you like for short stays. Importantly, holding one does not by itself guarantee entry: on arrival, a border guard will still ask for your passport and other documents to confirm that you meet the entry conditions.

How to apply and what you will be asked

The application form is available on the official ETIAS website or via the ETIAS mobile app. As published, the fee was €7 (about $7.76). Some travellers may be exempt from paying, including those under 18 or over 70, as well as family members of EU citizens and certain non-EU nationals with the right to move freely within the EU.

When applying, you will need your travel documents and payment to hand, and you will be asked for your full name, date and place of birth, nationality, home address, parents' first names, email address and phone number. You will also provide your passport number, details of your education and current occupation, your intended travel and accommodation, and any criminal convictions or past travel to a war or conflict zone. The information you submit must be true, and you confirm that you understand the entry conditions. You can review the full ETIAS application steps before you begin.

Processing time, validity and your passport link

Most applications are processed within minutes, though some can take up to four days. If you are asked for additional information, it may take up to 14 days, and in cases involving an interview, up to 30 days — which is why the advice is to apply well in advance. You will receive an email telling you whether the application is approved, and if it is refused, the message explains why and how to appeal.

Once approved, your ETIAS is valid for three years, or until your passport expires if that comes sooner. It allows stays of up to 90 days within any 180-day period, and you must hold a valid ETIAS for the entire stay. Because the authorisation is linked to your passport, the details on both must match; if they do not, you may not be allowed to board a flight, ship or bus heading to a country that requires ETIAS.
