What the Working Party on JHA Information Exchange Does
Much of the EU's work on security and borders depends on member states being able to share information reliably. Coordinating how that happens is the job of the Working Party on JHA Information Exchange (IXIM), a preparatory body of the Council of the EU.

Its role
IXIM examines proposals, policy initiatives and other measures concerning the exchange of information between competent authorities in the field of justice and home affairs. Its work spans legislative files, implementation issues and the interoperability of information systems, all aimed at improving cooperation, security and the effective functioning of justice and home affairs policies.
In practice, the working party supports the Council's decision-making by preparing discussions, helping to coordinate member states' positions, and contributing to the development and effective implementation of the EU framework for information exchange.
Who takes part
The working party brings together member states' officials responsible for information management at central level, including from interior and justice ministries and law enforcement authorities. Where useful, it also serves as a forum for regular exchanges between the heads of central units, such as the heads of SIRENE bureaux, Passenger Information Units, ETIAS National Units and single points of contact. It reports to the Justice and Home Affairs Council.
Why it matters for travellers
Bodies like IXIM rarely make headlines, but they shape the systems travellers eventually encounter at the border. The same information-exchange framework underpins tools such as the ETIAS travel authorisation. To see how that translates into a concrete requirement for visa-free visitors, our overview of how ETIAS works sets out the essentials.
